Bingo Companion

A companion app helping hard-of-hearing players follow along at Safe Animal Shelter's bingo fundraisers. The ball cage still draws numbers; each call appears live on their phones.

Problem

While volunteering at Safe Animal Shelter's Bingo Night, I noticed that players regularly fell behind or missed called numbers, whether from background noise, side conversations, or simply not catching the caller. Each missed number meant a frustrated player and a less enjoyable night.

That got me thinking:

What if every player could see the called numbers for themselves?

What was built

Rather than replacing how Bingo Night already worked, I built a companion app that sits on top of it. The balls stay in the cage and the caller still announces each number, so the event keeps its familiar feel. As each number is called, a volunteer taps or types it into the app, and it instantly appears for everyone following along:

  • Projector view – a large, room-wide display of called numbers
  • Mobile view – players scan a QR code to follow along on their own phones
  • Caller view – a simple input screen for logging numbers as they're drawn

Updates are pushed in real time, so the moment a number is entered, every screen in the room reflects it.

Process

The app was never "finished." It grew one Bingo Night at a time.

After every event, I asked myself one question: how can I make this better? Work on the next update started as soon as the last game ended:

  1. Observe – watch how players and volunteers actually used the app during the night
  2. Brainstorm – turn those observations into ideas
  3. Plan – decide what would make the biggest difference before the next event
  4. Build – ship it in time for the next Bingo Night

Some updates were new features, others were quality-of-life improvements or simple bug fixes. Every one was driven by real use at a real event, and every Bingo Night, the app got better.

Outcome

What started as a simple idea became a regular part of Safe Animal Shelter's Bingo Night. Players who used to fall behind can now follow every number at a glance, whether on the big screen or right from their phones.

  • 8+ Bingo Nights powered by the app since launch
  • 60+ participants following along
  • Fewer missed numbers and far fewer "what was that last number?" questions, according to players and volunteers

The response from players was overwhelmingly positive. Several even asked whether they could use the app at events they host themselves. Seeing people smile at how something so simple could make bingo better was one of the most rewarding parts of the project.

Most importantly, it lets everyone focus on what the night is really about: having fun and raising money for the animals.
